For the last 3 years each recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage award has been a member of the LGBT community. As a member of the community myself I am not sure if I should be excited or feel used.
Yes, of course this shows that society is trying to make strides in recognizing and honoring LGBT people by rewarding them top honors that normally we would not be able to receive. However, I think there is a question that still needs to be answered is for us or them?
LGBT people have struggled for years to be treated fairly and have the same equal rights as heterosexual people have, and now with the media everyone has been forced to recognize the issues and concerns of the LGBT community.
However, there are so many people that are against the LGBT lifestyle but pretend to be okay with it to seem politically correct.
In recent news there have been several LGBT stories that have made headlines and caused people to either accept it or hate it.
Our most recent news shocker was the transformation of Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner, which caused the ESPYs to award her with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
We have seen several times where public figures have disagreed with the majority or said the wrong thing on social media and have been condemned for it. This has caused them to either retract their statements by making a public apology or being rejected by their once fans or followers.
These incidents are happening a lot more than ever before and there seems to be a pattern of high-profile companies and celebrities who are making a stand they never made.
If you believe in something, shouldn’t you believe in it all the time? Not just when the media tells you it is okay.
Please understand that I am appreciative for any progress that can be made with educating and informing the public on the lives and struggles of the LGBT community, but what cost do we have to pay?
I have heard the saying all publicity is good publicly, is this true?
I could be wrong and the ESPYs along with the media could be truly accepting LGBT people for who we are or I could be right, either way I think questions should be asked.
